Description
This installation can be considered a sketch or storyboard for a new video and installation
project. Part of an ongoing series of Louis the Monkey projects initiated by artist, writer and
curator Andrew Hunter, this “version” is being developed as collaboration with artist and
curator David Poolman. The Louis the Monkey projects are based on narratives written about
a stuffed monkey found by Hunter in 2005. The first project in the series was presented in
the summer of 2007 at the Anna Leonowens Gallery at NSCAD University in Halifax and
presented Louis as a 1930s tough guy and gadabout viciously murdered by an enemy in an “Odd Fellows” conspiracy. The story was told through a “museum” installation of artifacts
and images accompanied by an illustrated book. In this new tale, Louis is being positioned
within a tragic father daughter narrative during the First World War. The installation
combines Hunters’ images of the primary site of the narrative (the Somme battlefield in
France), the three central characters and a soundtrack produced by David Poolman. These
elements are presented as a complete work in their own right as well as the foundation of
the video work in progress.
